Retention is the point, not a storage limit

When you check an EU VAT number with your own VAT number on file, VIES issues a consultation number — the reference a tax authority asks for as evidence the check happened. We keep those, searchable and exportable as CSV. Tax authorities look back years rather than weeks, so how long we keep them is what separates the plans.

Each record keeps the window of the plan you were on when the check was made, so downgrading never shortens evidence you already collected. Consultation numbers are issued by the European Commission; retention requirements and evidential weight vary by member state, and nothing here is tax advice.
