How often is VIES actually up?
The European Commission's VIES service is the only authoritative source for EU VAT registration, and it publishes no uptime history. We sample every member state every five minutes and publish what we find — including the days it makes us look bad.

What happens to your request when a registry goes down
Nothing breaks. We serve the last confirmed answer for that VAT number, and if we have none we report the registration as unverified rather than as invalid — a VIES outage is not evidence that your customer's VAT number is fake. The structural check always runs locally, so you keep a usable verdict either way.
